Substance Abuse in Student Populations

Recognizing, Understanding & Correcting Student Survival Habits

(For teachers, counselors, social workers & parents of teens and college students)

Did you know that about 1,400 college age students between the ages of 18 & 24 die from alcohol related injuries?

Did you know that excessive use of alcohol by students increases the dropout rate while simultaneously increasing institution costs?

Are you aware that increasing campus safety is paramount to the survival and legacy of the educational institution?

Have there been times when you suspect multiple diagnoses in problem students?

Are you aware that a child’s inability to relax may be an anxiety disorder?

Do you understand the logic behind the act of self-medicating?

Students mimic what they see and experience.  There are family and cultural dynamics that nurture and sustain addiction.  In spite of intentions, harmful dynamics can exist within all types of intact and/or blended families as well as campuses.  Learning about stimulus response and biological functions is the first step that parents, teachers, counselors and social workers must take in creating a plan of action that is informed by the facts.

All teens believe they are the center of the universe. They are also very good at manipulating the world around them in order to get what they want. In order for teen and college students to survive in life they need to understand the difference between their needs and their own desires
