Imagining a Drug-Free College Experience

7 Keys to Thriving Rather than Surviving the College Years

Finally…you are away from your parents’ watchful eye…

Are you easily distracted by non-productive activities?

Would it seem easier to relax by taking substances to reduce your anxiety?

Are there times when the distractions have more appeal than completing assignments?

Do you feel overwhelmed with reading and research required for class preparation and exams?

When your family and friends relax with alcohol, why not take their lead?

Even in your short life, you have gained wisdom through poor choices as a small child.  With your new insight and maturity, you would not make the same mistake again.  Your higher education experience is alive with a full spectrum of activities, from productive to unproductive.

How do you evaluate those options when you see business leaders, celebrities and respected members of your community and family abuse alcohol, prescription meds and illegal substances to reduce anxiety, prolong pleasure, avoid responsibility and escape reality?

“For some young adults in college away from family, structure and regulation, maladaptive behavior emerges as a coping mechanism to the social stresses and academic expectations of campus life; bad choices can lead to unproductive and often devastating behavioral patterns when it comes to substance abuse. Education and discipline ultimately right the course of one’s life.“       — Dr. Zari Alipour

In late 1980 amidst of the Iranian Revolution, Dr. Zari escaped the turmoil by immigrating to the United States where she continued her education and enjoyed the American ideals of freedom of speech and women’s rights.  With more than 25 years experience, Dr. Zari is a licensed psychologist, drug and alcohol counselor and hypnotherapist for children and the adults who interface with children.  She provides approaches to enable children and young adults to find their own strengths and make decisions that are in their best interests as well as approaches for the teachers, counselors and parents that will encourage children, support their sobriety and formal education.
